National insurance company limited is India's oldest general insurance company. It was incorporated in Kolkata in the year 1906 to fulfill the nation's aspiration for Swaraj. National insurance company was merged along with 21 foreign and 11 Indian companies to form the National Insurance company limited after passing of the General Insurance business nationalization act in 1972. National Insurance Company Limited then became a subsidiary of the General insurance corporation of India, an entity completely owned by the Government of India. After the passing of act and subsequent merger of all the companies to form the National insurance company limited, the shares of existing Indian and foreign general insurance companies were transferred to GIC for regulation and control of general insurance business in India.
